1988 USS STARK MEMORIAL SERVICE

The 1st USS Stark Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, May 17, 1988 at Naval Station Mayport Bravo pier. After the Service, family members and some of the survivors of the Stark were invited to go aboard the USS Antrim FFG-20 to go out to sea for a wreath laying ceremony. The ship went about 5 miles out to sea off the coast of Jacksonville. The Antrim's crew provided the Honor Guard detail. As fate would have it, the wreath washed ashore at the Fort George Island ferry and is now on display in Building 1.

Also on May 17, 1988, the USS Stump DD-978, conducted a Service and wreath laying ceremony in the Persian Gulf at the location where the USS Stark was attacked. A rifle salute was performed and taps was played to honor the 37 sailors lost the year prior.

On September 1, 1988, the Stark pulled into Mayport Naval Station after having spent months in Pascagula, MS for repairs.
